Akira Kurosaki - Contemporary Artist
Akira Kurosaki was born in Manchuria in 1937, and he has been living in
Kyoto, Japan and is active as a recognized woodcut artist who revitalized
the woodblock print technique in the twenty first century.
The unique features of Mr. Kurosaki's work can be described by the following.
Woodcut prints contain three-dimensional quality, grading color effects and depth of the design are created by using many blocks and colors. This process in some pieces takes as many as 15 blocks and over 20 colors. His editions are normally 50 to 100, but the complicated printing process makes each piece almost an original work.
His seventies and eighties works of art were introduced and exhibited at many institutions and were sold at galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe. However his nineties works have not been introduced and exhibited aboard as were his previous works, mainly due to changing his printing method after the death of his printer. Since his earlier woodcuts are no longer available, this web site is showing his works from the nineties to date. We are proud to have the privilege to reintroduce Akira Kurosaki, who has established his position as one of the top Japanese woodcut artists of our time.
Mr. Kurosaki was a professor in the department of printing at Kyoto Seika University and retired in 2007. There is no doubt that he will continue to create new works and nurture a new generation of print artists.
